Just my way of using the pen tool. The pen tool is pretty complicated thing to explain. Hopefully this is easy enough to understand. There is a lot more information that I could have put about the mechanics of the pen tool, but I didn't want this to be any longer. And really, it just takes patience and playing around with it.
Normally I wouldn't have bothered to make a tutorial, since there are so many already out there. But I wasn't quite satisfied with them. Most of them give an inefficient method involving adding anchor points in the middle of a path in order to move and curve them. If you want to use that method, that's fine, and those tutorials are out there.
I'm not saying it's wrong. But that method...just doesn't jive with me. XD It's inefficient, and adding extra anchor points puts more stress on the program.
Anyway. Enough of my spiel. Eww, I just ate a really nasy flavored jelly bean.
Someone on FP had specifically asked how to make lines with varying widths, which was the real reason I decided to do this tutorial anyway.
If you have any questions, feel free to note me or leave a message in a comment. I know I suck at doing tutorials. XD
Eee, I knew there had to be some confusion somewhere. The pen tool is hard enough, plus my horrible explaining skills...it equals disaster. XD;
Okay. I assume you mean making a completely new line that isn't connected to a previous line. To do that, just use the pen tool, hold down the Ctrl button, and click in the blank area of the picture. This deselects any lines/paths that may be active. Then you can just click with the pen tool to make a new anchor point and start a new line.
For the little notchy...I circled on the picture which one I was talking about. To grab the notchy, you hold down the Alt button on your keyboard, which turns the pen tool into a little half-triangle shape, click on the notchy (still holding the Alt button), and move it around so the path goes where you want.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and *Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same.
